Mathematics

This subteam, although having cool stuff, has a lot of math. For this reason we want to make sure that your introduction to the world of orbits, satellite maneuvers, and control algorithms is as smooth as possible.

One of the old leads went on make a unnecessarily detailed overview of some of the math in PowerPoint presentation attached below. Most members only need to deal with a small portion of the math shown in the PowerPoint. You are free to look into it to get the vibe of the math used. Remember that it is ok to you do not understand the vast majority of the content on the slides.

This document will highlight the basics of:

• Linear algebra (or at least the subset we use)
• Attitude (orientation) representations and conversions between them
• Basics of control system stability (Lyapunov is useful for nonlinear control systems)
• Orbital mechanics (no KSP physics on our watch)

General Resources

Again, the goal of this document is to familiarize you with the work of the team, and not make you an expert (at this moment).

There are a few resources that have proven time and time again on this subteam to be really handy. If you’re looking for specific information, these are a great place to start although can sometimes be simplified. Looking through them is completely optional.

• Fundamentals of Spacecraft Attitude Determination and Control
  • Excellent resource for getting a higher level view on the requirements that GNC needs to fulfill. Sometimes the modelling in this book can be a bit simplified (especially with respect to intricate details of reference frames). However, some of use own a physical copy due to its usefulness.
• Fundamentals of Astrodynamics and Applications
  • This book is great! If you’re looking for an already implemented algorithm or information for implementing a direct mathematical operation with respect to satellites this book will likely have the answer.
