Standard Operating Procedure for Using and Testing a Class 3R Laser
- Safety Precautions
- Always handle the laser carefully as it is considered safe but has a small hazard potential for accidental exposure.
- Never look directly into the laser beam or point the laser at another person.
Keep the laser beam away from flammable materials and surfaces.
- Never remove or bypass any safety devices or interlocks on the laser.
- Always keep the laser the UWOrbital locker when not in use.
- Do not deliberately look or stare into the laser beam. Laser protective eyewear is normally not necessary. However, a Class 3R laser can be a distraction, glare or flashblindness hazard for pilots and drivers.
- Never aim any laser towards an aircraft or vehicle that is in motion. This is unsafe and is illegal and you could be arrested and jailed.
- Operating Instructions
- Before using the laser, ensure that it is properly set up and in good working condition. The laser output power is between 1 and 4.99 milliwatts.
- Adjust the laser's focus, beam size, and other settings as necessary for your specific application.
- Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the safe operation of the laser.
Do not operate the laser without a UWOrbital team lead present
- Maintenance
- Keep a log of maintenance tasks and the date of completion.
- Testing Procedures
- Use a power meter to measure the laser's output power before and after each use.
- Compare the measured output power with the specifications for the laser.
Record the results of the test and any necessary adjustments made.
- Emergency Procedures
- In case of an injury, report the incident to your team lead immediately and seek medical attention if necessary.
- In case of a fire, immediately evacuate the area and call the fire department.
